PSG wonderkid Kylian Mbappe is out of the final five-man shortlist for Golden Boy Award despite winning the World Cup – with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold set to be included. The World Cup winner and Paris Saint-Germain forward is currently sitting outside the top five in the voting for the prize that he won last year.Kylian Mbappe is set to be a shock exclusion from the final list of five for the Golden Boy award

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is among those leading the way along with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, AC Milan’s Patrick Cutrone and Dutch duo Justin Kluivert and Matthijs de Ligt. Mbappe, 19, is looking to make history by becoming the first player to win the prize in consecutive years but Italian outlet Tuttosport, who created the award in 2003, has claimed he is close to missing out. There is still hope for Mbappe though. He has a chance to climb the rankings and into the final five with voting not set to close until the end of November. The award will be presented on December 17 at the Mole Antonelliana in Turin.

The award is voted on by a group of 35 journalists representing several of the largest media outlets in Europe, who have until the end of the month to make their decision. Mbappe, who had been favourite to land the award, continues to go from strength to strength, showing his class this season by netting 13 goals in 13 games. Winning the prize would cap off another sensational 12 months for the French youngster after he won the domestic Treble with PSG and went on to play a pivotal role in France’s victorious World Cup campaign in Russia.

He has still managed to net five goals in 13 appearances though. De Ligt is among the Ajax wonderkids who have been attracting interest from a host of elite European clubs recently. The ball-playing centre back has also just broken into the Holland national team.

Ronaldo, currently facing allegations of rape dating back to 2009 that he strenuously denies, has already won the Ballon d’Or five times and is the current holder of the award. Messi has also won the award on five occasions.

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero and PSG’s Neymar are nominated as are two other prolific South American strikers: Uruguayans Edinson Cavani of PSG and Luis Suarez of Barcelona.

Liverpool’s Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino and Uruguay’s rugged defender Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid also got the nod.

Four goalkeepers are also among the 30 — Thibaut Courtois of Belgium and Real Madrid, Liverpool and Brazil stopper Alisson Becker, Tottenham’s France World Cup winner Hugo Lloris and Atletico’s Jan Oblak.

Also making the cut are Juve’s Mario Mandzukic and Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, while Barcelona are also represented by Croat defender Ivan Rakitic.

For the first time, a Ballon d’Or for women players will be awarded this year, with Champions League winners Lyon accounting for seven of the 15 nominees.

France internationals Amandine Henry, Amel Majri and Wendie Renard are joined on the list by Germany’s Dzsenifer Marozsan, England’s Lucy Bronze, Ada Hegerberg of Norway and Japan defender Saki Kumagai.

Brazil’s Marta, crowned best women’s player for a record sixth time at last month’s FIFA awards, is also in contention after her role in winning the Copa America.

Other nominees are Pernille Harder, Lindsey Horan, Fran Kirby, Sam Kerr, Lieke Martens, Megan Rapinoe and Christine Sinclair.

In another first, the best under-21 player will receive the Kopa Trophy. Kylian Mbappe, the Paris Saint-Germain striker who burst onto the global scene with his performances as France won the World Cup, is the favourite.

The Ballon d’Or, which was first won by Englishman Stanley Matthews in 1956, is decided by a ballot of journalists from around the world.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side, champions for the past seven seasons, maintained a three-point lead over Napoli at the top of the table, while Bologna remain in the relegation zone.

Former Paris St-Germain midfielder Matuidi arrived late in the six-yard box to finish off a mishit shot by Ronaldo.

Juve have now won their opening six league games of the season for three years in a row, but this season added a Champions League victory in Valencia.
